WHO KNEW!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Can cats<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-313 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/garretpachtinger.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/cat-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"cat\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/garretpachtinger.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/cat-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/garretpachtinger.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/cat-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/garretpachtinger.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/cat.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> get the flu? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We once thought the simple answer was&#8230;no. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">But this past week <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsheltermedicine.com\/news\/2016\/12\/faqs-feline-infections-with-influenza-a-in-new-york\" target=\"_blank\"> we were surprised to learn<\/a> that cats were found to be infected with the flu virus, influenza A, in New York!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">13 cats in New York tested positive for influenza A virus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We still have a lot to learn about this specific influenza (flu) virus! We are not yet sure how they were infected with the virus, if it is a dog, cat, or even human strain, and how it is spread. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">As a quick refresher, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/KB\/Resources\/FAQs\/Pages\/Control-of-Canine-Influenza-in-Dogs.aspx\">H3N2 canine influenza<\/a> (flu) virus has been circulating in the US since early 2015 and reports of infections in cats are very rare!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">What&#8217;s another challenge? The signs of illness in these affected cats were pretty vague! Common signs of illness included a runny nose, congestion and general lethargy. These are pretty darn similar to the simple, common, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vcahospitals.com\/main\/pet-health-information\/article\/animal-health\/feline-upper-respiratory-infection\/4102\">upper respiratory infection seen in cats<\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">If you think your cat is not feeling well with signs of illness such as lethargy, sneezing, coughing, a runny nose, or fever, please contact your veterinarian.
